Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Timezone Converter
A timezone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Timezones generally follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions instead of strictly following longitude.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is effectively the successor to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and is used as the basis for calculating time in different zones.
While UTC and GMT are often used interchangeably, UTC is a time standard based on atomic clocks, while GMT is a time zone. For practical purposes, they are the same, but UTC is more precise and doesn't observe daylight saving time.
Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. Not all countries observe DST, and those that do may change their clocks on different dates.
To convert time between timezones, you need to know the UTC offset of both zones. Add or subtract the difference between the offsets from your starting time. Our tool does this automatically, accounting for DST when applicable.
Some countries chose non-standard UTC offsets to better align with their geographical position or for historical reasons. Examples include India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and parts of Australia.
There are 24 primary timezones based on hourly differences from UTC, but in practice, there are over 40 timezones when you include those with 30 and 45-minute offsets.
Your computer typically uses your local timezone, which is detected automatically based on your location settings. You can view and change this in your system settings.
When scheduling international meetings, always specify the timezone explicitly (e.g., "3 PM EST" or "15:00 UTC"). Use a timezone converter to find times that work across different zones, considering working hours in each location.
The International Date Line is an imaginary line on Earth's surface running from the North Pole to the South Pole at roughly 180° longitude. When you cross it going west, you add a day; going east, you subtract a day.
